why power sharing is desirable?
What is power sharing?
Power sharing is a method to distribute a country's power among different organs and administrative organizations of a country. For example, India is a vast country and the Prime Minister alone cannot handle all situations of the country. So the power is distributed among different states. The chief ministers of different states cannot handle the state alone, so in this case the power is distributed to MLA. But MLA also unable to handle the whole district alone,so the power is distributed among zila Parishad, Panchayat and Gram Sabha. In this way the whole country works with the help of power sharing and maintaining democracy.
Case study of Belgium and Sri Lanka
First of all we need to know that it is really important to apply power sharing in a country. With the help of these two countries we will conclude at the end that power sharing is needed in a country or not.
Belgium is a small country in Europe. It shares its boundary with Dutch, Netherlands, France and Germany. Its population is around 10 million and its country population composition is very complex. On the basis of language, people of Belgium are divided into 3 categories 59% of people speak Dutch, 40% speak French and the rest 1% speak German. But in Brussels, the capital of Belgium, the population composition is different, with 80% French speakers while 20% are Dutch. As the power of the central government is in Brussels, so major power of the country is in the hands of French speakers.

Sri Lanka is located in the South of India. Its population is around 20 million. Like Belgium, Sri Lankan people are also divided into different categories on the basis of language. The major social groups are Sinhala speakers and Tamil speakers. 74% of the population speak Sinhala and 18% of the population speak Tamil. Among the Tamils there are two sub groups Sri Lankan Tamil which is about 13% and Indian Tamil which is about 5%. As Sinhala is majority in Sri Lanka, the power of the country is controlled by sinhala.
Now the role of power sharing comes into effect. Belgium shares its power between both Dutch and French. They also make a community government which helps the people at community level. So with the help of power sharing among different groups of people Belgium makes a better democratic country. Belgium is such a peaceful country that the European Union decided to open its headquarters in Brussels.
On the other hand in Sri Lanka Sinhala people did not give rights to the Tamil speakers. They made their Sinhala language the official language of Sri Lanka. They also discriminate Tamils on the basis of jobs and opportunities. As rights were not given to Tamils speaking people they started the demand that they want a different nation in the North of Sri Lanka where only Tamils live with dignity. But this offer is also denied by Sinhala. So a civil war started between Tamil and Sinhala speakers where thousands of people died. The war officially ended in 2009.
Now we can conclude from above story that power sharing is very important for every country to run smoothly and without conflict like Sri Lanka.
