J&K update: Lives of local people in fear

Jammu and Kashmir, known for its breathtaking landscapes and rich culture, has also been a region marked by decades of conflict. While much of the world views the region through political and strategic lenses, the voices of the local people—the true bearers of the burden—often go unheard. Their stories reveal the human cost of war in a land that longs for peace.

Disrupted Lives and Lost Livelihoods

During periods of conflict, from the Indo-Pak wars to prolonged militancy and cross-border shelling, everyday life in villages near the Line of Control (LoC) comes to a standstill. Farmers abandon fields, schools shut down, and businesses close. Livelihoods tied to agriculture and tourism—the economic backbone of many communities—suffer greatly.

Families living in border areas such as Poonch, Rajouri, and Kupwara are frequently displaced due to shelling. Makeshift shelters and migration become the norm. Children grow up with the constant sound of gunfire and the fear of losing loved ones.

Psychological Trauma and Fear

Beyond the physical danger, the emotional and psychological toll on the people is immense. Children, especially, are vulnerable to anxiety and PTSD due to the exposure to violence. Families mourn the loss of kin, often without closure or justice. The fear of sudden attacks creates a sense of instability that affects every aspect of daily life.

Interrupted Education and Healthcare

Education suffers deeply during conflict. Schools are used as shelters or closed indefinitely. Many children in conflict zones drop out permanently, setting back entire generations. Healthcare also becomes inaccessible as hospitals struggle with staff shortages, supply issues, and security risks.
